Dear Reader, you are invited to open a literary time-capsule.
Van Douglas is the pen name of a present-day American consultant, inventor, and technology entrepreneur. Using his professional work as a source of ideas, he writes fiction for two reasons. The pleasure of writing. And the joyous detachment that comes from making up a story for others to enjoy.
He began writing novels 25 years ago at the same time he was building his mainstream professional credentials. Fiction-writing was both a passion and a side-hustle. He markets his four self-published novels in their original form so readers also savor what life was like at the dawn of the 21st century. Once upon a time, incredible but true, Blackberries were a technology marvel. Nobody knew that genetic engineering could alter the species. And hardly anybody knew who Donald Trump even was.
Why conspiracies? A conspiracy is a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. In Van Douglas fiction, as in reality, every conspiracy theory contains facts that make it plausible. Using conspiracies as a unifying theme, he could try his hand at a variety of styles: political thrillers (Shadows Back to Kennedy), literary fiction (The Respite of Ghosts), dystopian satire (Dazeland Blindem), and humor (The Irish Fiction Conspiracy).
His systems experience on Capitol Hill provides a factual setting for Shadows Back to Kennedy. His work with bio-tech information systems inspired his vision of genetic engineering gone haywire in Dazeland Blindem. Consulting with small, intense leadership teams shaped the dialog in The Respite of Ghosts. Last but not least, his challenges as an Irish-American novelist looking for a publisher lend the comic ingredient to The Irish Fiction Conspiracy.
Satire. Science. Dystopia.
What happens when genetic engineering, big science, and high finance conspire? You get biotech mogul Dazeland Blindem. His plan? Hijack the economy of a slowly dying Earth and send giant worms with human brains to colonize Mars.
Humor. Life. Ethnicity.
The foibles of wannabe author Winston O'Salem. He isn't sure if he is really black, or Irish, or both. But for sure he can't get published. Why? Winston thinks he found the answer. He, like the famous James Joyce one century earlier, are victims of a conspiracy against Irish writers.
Action. Politics. Shock.
No real-life plot has been this bold or deadly. In this tale, "fake news" conceals a conspiracy to destroy America's leadership and gain control of the Nuclear Codes. Known only to the president dating back to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the Codes give one human being the power to unleash Armageddon in a matter of minutes.
Tense. Cerebral. Eerie.
In this psychological thriller, psychiatrist Isaac Abraham and four patients discover that "a conspiracy of Minds and Gods" holds their eternal Souls captive. All must face the truth about themselves as ransom for their release.
